Sarge's Story

Late night phone calls on Sundays are never good news. This particular night a Gibraltar Veterinary Hospital staff member, Robin, was calling. Robin, a long-time member of the GVH reception team, was distraught and worried. She told me that her beloved German Shepherd, Sarge, was suffering despite the regimen of anti-inflammatories, pain medications, and glucosamine. After eight years the medication was no longer relieving his pain and symptoms. Heartbroken, Robin reluctantly decided to humanely end Sarge’s suffering. What other choice did she have?

In my early years of practicing veterinary medicine there were no other choices. Today, however, I am glad to have an alternative treatment to offer this patient. Thanks to strides in veterinary medicine, I am certified in Stem Cell Therapy.

Sarge had been diagnosed with chronic osteoarthritis of both hips. The quality of life was not good for Sarge. Robin and her family watched as their loved one struggled to stand up, let alone walk.

In May 2008, I performed the Stem Cell treatment on Sarge. One week later he was in the back yard chasing the family cat and playing! He continued to do well even though he still needed his previous medication protocol. Sarge’s pain was under control, he was happy, and so was Robin!

In December 2008, Sarge started to show symptoms of spinal cord degeneration. He started slowing down and a different pain began to take over. Robin and I decided to administer another Stem Cell treatment, this time to target his back instead of his hips. Sarge has had no neurological signs since this last treatment given eleven months ago. He is still happy, pain free, and living a comfortable life with his family.

Robin keeps me updated on our miracle dog, Sarge. I smile knowing that this remarkable procedure kept a beloved pet with his family. It made a huge difference in their lives and I feel blessed to be a part of this new and growing treatment option.
